Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning & Engineering
Sean leads the design, development and implementation of engineering processes and technology solutions at FedEx Freight. He leads a team responsible for designing and developing the business processes, planning tools, and operations technology for over 40,000 FedEx team members. Sean has over 30 years of experience in the transportation industry, having joined the company in 1986 as a package handler. Prior to his current position, he was the Vice President of Global Planning and Engineering at FedEx Express.
Driving Innovation – In this session, Sean will discuss how to drive innovation by leveraging decision automation. He will cover how FedEx Freight utilizes design thinking to balance user needs with what is technologically possible and what is profitable to deliver sustained customer value and market opportunities. He will also discuss key trends affecting business and go through several examples of how FedEx Freight has used decision automation to deliver innovations.
Russell John Allgor
Chief Scientist, World-Wide Operations and Logistics
Since 2000, Russell has led a team of mathematical modeling experts in Amazon’s Global Fulfillment Systems and Worldwide Logistics group, which uses modeling, simulation, and optimization methods to improve the efficiency of Amazon’s operations. They focus on problems including network design and facility location, inventory planning, order assignment, equipment and process designs. He received a PhD in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Transportation Challenges in a Rapidly Growing and Highly Seasonal Business – Amazon’s retail growth drives the need for fulfillment and transportation capacity to support a seasonal peak that requires more capacity every year. Amazon evolves its network of fulfillment and transportation infrastructure to position inventory and to leverage and augment the capacity provided by commercial transportation carriers to enable rapid customer deliveries to customers. Designing and operating this transportation network drives a plethora of modeling and optimization challenges.
Vice President, Network Planning
Chuck is responsible for the planning and development of American’s worldwide route network, including scheduling 6,700 daily flights throughout Asia, Europe, North America and South America, as well as the development of the company’s long-term network strategy. Chuck previously held various managing director positions within American, most recently as Managing Director, Network Planning – Schedules. His team also coordinated network strategy under American’s trans-Atlantic joint business agreement with British Airways and Iberia.
New Generation Network Planning Systems for Airlines – The Network Planning (NP) department at American Airlines is developing new generation systems (such as demand forecasting systems) that use the latest technological advances from operations research and computer science. These systems will support business users better and will also be easy to use. These systems will put data and analysis in the hands of network planners so that they can run various studies quickly and create greater business value. This talk will give an overview of these initiatives as well as other network planning initiatives pursued by other airlines.
